An unofficial guide to Byodoin

Byodoin Today is an independent, unofficial guide. It is not run by, approved by or affiliated with Byodoin Temple. The temple's official website is byodoin.or.jp.

It is run by Kyoya Fujioka and operated by CofJC Inc., a company in Kyoto.

Why this site exists

Most visitors come to Byodoin, in Uji just south of Kyoto, to see the Phoenix Hall. Getting inside means a separate timed ticket, sold only on the day, with a talk in Japanese. Many visitors find this out at the gate. This site tells you before you go: how busy it is likely to be, when the interior tickets may run out, and what you'll see inside, in English.

How the forecast works

It is our own estimate, not official information and not a live count. The hourly crowd level is a rule-based model: a typical daily pattern (quiet after the 8:45 opening, busy late morning to mid-afternoon, easing after 15:00), raised on weekends, holidays and in peak seasons (cherry blossom, wisteria, Golden Week, autumn leaves, New Year), and lowered for rain or snow in the Japan Meteorological Agency forecast.

The waiting time for the Phoenix Hall interior starts from the temple's own month-by-month estimates for 2025. Because sessions shrank from 50 to 35 people on 16 October 2026, we multiply those by 1.2, then apply the same season, long-weekend and weather adjustments. The sell-out time follows from the waiting time and the day's crowd pattern. All the numbers are in one settings file so we can correct them as real observations come in.

Where the facts come from

Hours, fees and the interior rules are checked against the temple's official website, with the date we checked shown on each page. The English explanation of the hall's interior is written in our own words from the Japan Tourism Agency's multilingual commentary database. Train times come from the temple's access guide. The walking map is drawn by us from OpenStreetMap data. We don't use the temple's logo, crest, photos or pamphlet designs.
